How we make money

Three things pay for this site: memberships, sponsorships and affiliate commissions.

Memberships

Roofing companies and suppliers pay for membership, and membership is worth having: verification by a person, featured placement on their category pages, and — at the top rung — a showcase page of their own. What each tier includes is priced on our pricing pages. Being listed at all is free: roughly 100,000 contractors are in the directory and most have never paid us anything.

Sponsorships

A company can sponsor a category, a state Storm Center, a library document or an encyclopedia article. A sponsorship adds a band that credits the sponsor by name. It is an addition to the page, so the editorial lists stay in the order they were already in.

Affiliate commissions

Some links to third-party products are paid: if you click one and then buy or sign up, the company pays us a commission. It costs you nothing extra and the price is the same either way. Those links are marked where you find them, and they carry rel="sponsored" in the page code so search engines can see the relationship too.

What we record when you click a paid link

A paid link goes through our own address first, so that we can count the click. We record the page it came from, a short random reference, your rough location by state, whether you were on a phone or a computer, and a one-way hash of your IP address. We do not store your IP address itself, we do not store the full address of the page you came from, and we do not set advertising cookies. See the privacy policy.
