    Which one do you need?

    The three tools chain together, and for most jobs you will use them in this order.

    Start with pitch, because everything downstream depends on it

    You cannot size a materials order from a floor plan, because a sloped roof is always larger than the footprint it sits on. The roof pitch calculator gives you the multiplier that closes that gap, and it tells you which slope class the roof falls into — which in turn decides whether shingles are even permitted, whether the underlayment needs doubling, and whether the crew will charge a steep-pitch premium.

    Then square it up, and add the waste you will actually generate

    The roofing squares calculator takes the footprint and the pitch and returns squares, a waste allowance and a bundle count. If you are checking a contractor’s bid, compare against the net roof area before waste — that is the number two honest estimates should agree on.

    And do not skip the attic

    Ventilation is the cheapest line on a re-roof and the one most often left as it was found. The ventilation calculator sizes intake and exhaust from the attic floor area. Several shingle manufacturers condition their warranty on code-compliant ventilation, so getting it wrong can cost more than the vents would have.

    How to use these calculators

    • Measure from the ground and the attic, not the roof. Every input these tools need can be taken with your feet on something solid. No number on this site is worth a fall, and a contractor will measure the roof for free during an estimate.
    • Treat the output as a takeoff, not a quote. Square counts do not include underlayment, ice and water shield, drip edge, flashing, ridge cap, tear-off, disposal or deck repair. The installation guide covers what those cost.
    • Split the roof up when the pitches differ. Garages, porches and additions are routinely framed shallower than the main house. Calculating the whole thing at one pitch is the most common way these numbers go wrong.
    • Confirm code requirements locally. Ventilation ratios and shingle slope limits come from the model residential code, and jurisdictions amend it. Your building department is the authority, and one phone call settles it.
    • Check contractor licensing yourself. Our listings are compiled from public records — confirm any contractor’s license and insurance with your state licensing board before work begins.
