    Class 4 Impact-Resistant Shingles

    Class 4 is the top step of a four-step scale, and the whole scale comes out of one laboratory procedure: a steel ball dropped onto a shingle, twice in the same spot, and a technician looking for a crack — including on the back of the sample. That is the entire measurement. It is a real number about one property of one new shingle, and it gets sold as though it meant the roof cannot be hailed.

    Roofers want to know which of the two very different ways of building a Class 4 shingle is in the bundle, because they do not behave the same on a cold roof. Homeowners want to know whether the insurance credit pays for the upcharge. Both answers are here, in that order.

    What the rating actually measures

    A sample shingle is fastened to a deck section in the lab and a steel ball is released from a fixed height onto a chosen spot, then a second ball onto the same spot. Each class pairs a ball diameter with a drop height, both increasing with the class number, so Class 4 is the largest ball from the greatest height. Pass or fail is a visual examination for cracking, splitting, tearing or rupture.

    The detail that carries all the meaning is which surface gets examined. The technician turns the sample over. Surface bruising — a dented spot, a bare patch where granules were knocked loose — is not what fails a shingle here. What fails it is the reinforcing mat splitting through, and a mat can split while the face still looks like a shingle. That mirrors the roof: the damage that lets water in is a fracture you find by feel and from underneath, not a scuff you find from the driveway.

    The repeat impact matters too: a storm delivers a barrage, and the second hit lands on asphalt already deformed by the first.

    Class 3 is not “almost Class 4”

    Class 1 through Class 4 are discrete steps, not a percentage scale, and carriers that offer an impact-resistant credit almost always write it for Class 4 only. A separate method exists that fires molded ice balls rather than steel — a harder screen, but a different test with different criteria.

    What it does not measure — the part everybody skips

    • Granule loss. A sample can shed granules liberally and still pass, because the criterion is fracture, not surfacing. On a real roof, granule loss is what shortens the shingle’s life — exposed asphalt oxidizes fast.
    • Age. The test is run on new material. Asphalt stiffens as it loses volatiles, and a shingle in year eleven of a Class 4 warranty is a meaningfully different material from the one that was tested.
    • Wind. Impact class and wind class are separate tests producing separate numbers. A Class 4 shingle is not, by virtue of that rating, better in a gale.
    • Temperature. The procedure runs under controlled laboratory conditions. Hail arrives with cold-front weather, and asphalt gets brittle as it cools.
    • The roof. Ridge cap, starter, valley metal, pipe boots, vents, skylights and gutters are not in the test. Hail does not respect the boundary of the field shingle.

    None of that makes the rating worthless. It makes it narrow. Class 4 is a claim about the fracture resistance of new field shingles — read it as exactly that.

    Two engineering routes to Class 4 — and they are not the same product

    This part never makes it into the sales conversation, and it is the part a roofer should care about.

    Route one: polymer-modified (SBS) asphalt

    A rubber polymer — usually styrene-butadiene-styrene — is blended into the asphalt itself. The binder becomes elastomeric. Hit it and the shingle deforms and comes back rather than fracturing, the way a rubber mallet head absorbs a blow. Because the modification is in the binder, it also lowers the temperature at which the shingle goes brittle — which matters enormously, since hail season is cold-front season. They cost more to make and more to buy.

    Route two: a reinforcing scrim laminated to the back

    An otherwise conventional shingle gets a woven or laid fabric bonded across the back. When the asphalt cracks under impact, the fabric holds the mat together, so there is no through-fracture on the underside. This passes the test honestly — it is a real reinforcement doing real work.

    But the mechanism is different. One product resists cracking; the other contains it. The binder in a mesh-backed shingle is still conventional asphalt, so its cold-weather stiffness is unchanged, and the reinforcement does nothing about granule loss. That is not an argument against buying one. It is an argument for knowing which is on the truck.

    Both routes earn the same Class 4 designation. Formulations, cold-weather claims and installation requirements vary by manufacturer and product line.

    The insurance side, in the order it actually happens

    Many carriers offer a premium credit for an impact-rated roof, and in some states carriers are required to offer one. Whether a credit exists on your policy, how large it is, whether it applies to the whole premium or only to the wind and hail portion, and what paperwork triggers it are all carrier-by-carrier and state-by-state. Anyone quoting a national percentage is guessing.

    What the homeowner has to produce is fairly consistent:

    • The specific product name. “Class 4 shingles” is not an answer a carrier can process. They want the manufacturer and the exact product line installed.
    • The manufacturer’s certification document — the sheet stating that product’s impact classification.
    • Sometimes a photo of the bundle wrapper on the job, sometimes a contractor letter, sometimes the final invoice with the product line spelled out. Have the crew shoot the wrapper before it goes in the dumpster.

    The timing catches people out: the credit is applied at renewal, after the carrier processes the documentation. It is not automatic, not usually retroactive, and nobody at the insurance company knows you re-roofed unless you tell them. Call the agent before you sign the contract, while the answer can still change your decision.

    Two questions to ask the agent on that call

    Does this policy carry a cosmetic damage exclusion, and does it pay the roof at replacement cost or on an actual-cash-value or age-based schedule? And what documentation do you need, applied when? Those two answers move the payback math more than the shingle choice does.

    The upcharge, and doing the arithmetic honestly

    Impact-rated shingles carry a real premium over a comparable standard laminate from the same manufacturer — a range per square rather than a fixed figure, because it moves with the market, the product, the color and what your supplier is sitting on. Ask for both prices per square on the same quote. That is the only number that means anything.

    The important framing: the upcharge applies to the shingle, not the job. Tear-off, labor, underlayment, edge metal, ventilation and disposal do not change, so an upcharge that looks alarming as a share of the shingle price is a much smaller share of the contract. Divide the total dollar difference by the annual premium credit and you have a payback in years. If that is longer than you expect to own the house, it is a different decision.

    Why a Class 4 roof still gets replaced

    Large hail driven by wind still bruises impact-rated shingles, still fractures mats and still strips granules. The rating raises the threshold; it does not remove it. An adjuster laying out test squares on a Class 4 roof after a severe storm runs the same inspection they would run on anything else, and plenty of those roofs get totaled.

    What has changed more than the shingles is the policy language. Cosmetic damage exclusions — which cover functional damage but not dents and marring — and roof schedules that depreciate the covering by age both shift risk onto the homeowner regardless of impact class. In that environment the realistic benefit of a Class 4 roof is often a smaller loss rather than no loss: fewer marginal claims, fewer deductibles, a longer interval between replacements.     Where the rule breaks down

    Your hail exposure may not justify the upcharge at all

    The impact-resistant case is built on the hail corridor up the middle of the country. In a market that sees damaging hail once a decade, the same dollars spent on better edge metal, a proper ice barrier or fixing the ventilation buy more roof.

    A cosmetic damage exclusion changes the whole calculation

    Some carriers write the impact-resistant credit and a cosmetic damage exclusion into the same policy. If dents and granule scarring are excluded and the shingle is doing its job of not splitting, you can end up with a visibly hailed roof, a denied claim and a discount that never covered the upcharge. Read the exclusions, not just the credit.

    The impact-rated version of a line can install differently

    Impact-rated products are sometimes thicker, heavier or differently laminated than the standard shingle in the same family, and the printed instructions can call for a different nail count, placement or starter detail to reach the same wind coverage.     A Class 3 product sold as "impact resistant"

    “Impact resistant” is a marketing phrase covering all four classes. The check is simple: get the exact product name in writing on the contract, then look it up or ask for the certification sheet. A contractor who will not name the product on the contract has answered the question.

    The rating is on the shingle, not on the roof

    Hip and ridge cap, starter, valley metal, pipe boots and vents are separate products, and most are not impact rated. Neither is the decking. A soft deck or an unventilated attic cooking the shingles from below decides the outcome long before impact class does.

    An aged Class 4 shingle is not a new Class 4 shingle

    Every rating on the market measures new material. Asphalt hardens with age and UV, polymer modifiers are not immune to that, and nobody re-tests the roof at year fifteen. A roof bought for its impact rating is at its best the week it goes on.

    Will Class 4 shingles stop hail damage?

    No. They raise the size and speed of stone it takes to fracture the shingle, so smaller and more common hail events stop producing claimable damage. Severe hail still totals them. The honest pitch is fewer claims, not no claims.

    How much is the insurance discount?

    It depends on the carrier, the state and often the rating territory, and it may apply to the full premium or only the wind and hail portion. Where a state requires a credit, that sets the offer, not the size. Get the number from your own agent for your own address before you price the job.

    Is SBS-modified worth the extra over a mesh-backed shingle?

    In a cold-climate hail market, usually yes, because the modified binder keeps working at the temperatures hail actually falls at. In a warm market with moderate exposure the mesh-backed product is a reasonable buy for the same printed rating. Both are legitimate products.

    Can I put Class 4 on one slope and standard on the rest?

    Physically yes; practically no. Carriers credit the roof, not a slope, and a partial installation generally will not qualify. It also complicates any future claim, because the adjuster now has two products on one building.
