Owens Corning Technical Bulletin: Hip & Ridge and Starter Requirements for Limited Lifetime Coverage

TB-10023709-BW TECHNICAL BULLETIN THE USE OF HIP & RIDGE AND STARTER WITH LIMITED LIFETIME SUPERSEDES PREVIOUS BULLETINS

Issue Description: This bulletin confirms requirements for the use of Owens Corning® Starter Shingles and Owens Corning® Hip & Ridge shingles to maintain lifetime coverage per the terms of the Owens Corning Limited Warranties*, which cover product manufacturing defects. These warranties state that any issues resulting from improper or faulty installation of shingles are not covered, and that installation must be in accordance with our written installation instructions and comply with local building codes.

Starter Shingles: The application instructions for all Owens Corning shingles with a Limited Lifetime Warranty including Oakridge® Shingles, all Duration® Series Shingles, and WeatherGuard® HP Shingles call for the use of an Owens Corning® Starter Strip product. These products include Owens Corning® Starter Strip, Owens Corning® Starter Strip Plus, and Owens Corning® Starter Shingle Roll. These products are designed for use along the eave and rake edge, and when installed correctly, assure correct position of sealant and joints to protect against wind and water infiltration.

As an alternate method, trimming laminates as shown in Figure B is also acceptable.

The use of a laminate shingle or a three-tab shingle upside down as a starter is not acceptable. This will place the sealant bead in the wrong location, compromising wind performance at the eave.

Additionally, cutting the tabs off of three tab shingles for use as a starter is not acceptable for a roof on which laminate shingles will be installed. Using cut three-tab shingles in this way will result in offset problems due to the length difference between three-tab and laminate shingles. Eventually, the vertical joints will line up with the first course of shingles above and create potential for a leak.

Hip & Ridge Shingles: The application instructions for all Owens Corning® shingles with a Limited Lifetime warranty, including Oakridge® Shingles, all Duration® Series Shingles, and Weatherguard® HP shingles call for the use of an of an Owens Corning® Hip & Ridge Shingle. Owens Corning makes a variety of Hip & Ridge shingles which are specially formulated to be bent over a ridge and are designed to perform in that position as part of a Lifetime roof system. Furthermore, all Owens Corning® Hip & Ridge Shingles are made to match the color of the field shingles and resist wind uplift. The ridge area is especially vulnerable to high winds and Owens Corning® Hip & Ridge Shingles are tested and warranted per the terms of the warranty for wind performance for use in that location.

The use of scrap laminate shingles as ridge cap is not acceptable. Laminate shingles are designed for installation on a flat surface and will not bend properly over a ridge.

The use of three-tab shingles as ridge cap also does not meet the requirements of a lifetime roof system as they carry a maximum 25-year product limited warranty. In addition, three-tab shingles only provide a 60 mph wind resistance warranty which falls far short of the 110 mph or 130 mph wind resistance warranty provided by Owens Corning® Hip & Ridge Shingles.
