You are entered for every month you are still subscribed. One entry per person, each month, whether you joined yesterday or a year ago.
The draw
How the winner is picked, and how you can check it
“We picked someone at random” is a claim nobody can check. This one is built so that you can.
A random seed is generated when the month opens, and its SHA-256 fingerprint is published straight away — before entries close, before we know who is in. The seed cannot then be swapped for one that picks a favourite, because the fingerprint would not match.
The winning position is derived from the seed and a fingerprint of the entrant list, by HMAC-SHA256 with rejection sampling so every entrant is equally likely. Same seed and same list, same answer, on anybody’s computer.
With each result we publish the seed, the entrant-list fingerprint, the number of entrants and the winning position. Only one draw per month can be recorded, so there is no second attempt to hide.
What we do not publish is the entrant list itself. Those are subscribers’ records and they are nobody’s business — the fingerprint pins the list without exposing a single address, which is the whole reason it is there.
